Radon and Toenails: New Research Could Potentially Identify a Way to Measure Radon Exposure

When it comes to radon exposure, one of the biggest challenges is knowing how much exposure a person has experienced over time. Radon is invisible, odorless, and tasteless, so you cannot tell whether you have been exposed simply by looking around your home.

New research is exploring an unusual potential clue: your toenails.

Researchers in Canada are investigating whether toenail samples could eventually help identify biomarkers associated with long-term radon exposure. The goal is to better understand an individual’s cumulative environmental exposures and potentially improve how lung cancer risk is assessed.

Why Look at Toenails?

Toenails can preserve certain elements and biological markers over time, making them an interesting source for researchers studying environmental exposures. Researchers at Dalhousie University and their collaborators are examining toenail specimens for radon-related markers, including lead produced through the radioactive decay process associated with radon.

The research team is comparing these measurements with other information about residential radon exposure and health outcomes. They are also investigating molecular signatures that could indicate damage associated with radon exposure.

If these biomarkers can be validated, they could eventually provide researchers with another way to estimate a person’s long-term exposure history.

Could Toenails Replace a Radon Test?

This research is promising, but it is still research. A toenail sample is not currently a substitute for testing the air inside your home.
